72717 - Cost-Performance Analysis of New Heating Equipment for Green and Efficient Asphalt Roofing Using Infrared Radiation Heaters and Fuel Burners
Nowadays, roofing methods play an essential role in the energy efficiency and weather resistance of buildings and houses. One common roof protection method is to install asphalt roofing. Asphalt roofing is a construction process that is usually not efficient and clean. Both in terms of CO2 and other pollutants emission but also in terms of production costs. clean and efficient. This task is manually performed in most of the situations. A worker can install around 20–25 rolls per day (200–250 m2) using this manual procedure. Such a reduced capacity for manual installation has motivated patents and developments of new systems and equipment to facilitate and enhance roll installation speed.
The team presenting this work have created a patent granted industrial heating equipment that automatizes and improves the efficiency of this process. This equipment consists in a trolley that permits to move and unwrap the asphalt roofing rolls while they are heated up by automatic efficient heaters. These heaters are located in the surrounding of the rolls in order to increase the heat transfer efficiency. The novelty of the equipment is based on the use of a set of five electric heaters (or gas burners) located around of the roll to maximize heat transfer. The equipment is light and can be used by any worker at any
type of roof. It also includes a thermal insulation cover to significantly reduce gas consumption and, thus, to reduce CO2, SO2, and other non-eco-friendly emissions. These reductions occur not only in the installation process, but also during processes of rehabilitation or replacement of the asphalt roofing. The equipment has two versions: one where infrared heaters apply the thermal power to the rolls and a second one using fuel burners for the heating.
In this work, we present and describe both options, we compare their technical performances and we perform a cost saving analysis of the equipment. Infrared heater version provides clean and efficient thermal power transfer since no fuel is needed for the operation as infrared heaters are powered by electricity. This type of heating has never been used before for asphalt roofing. This version demonstrates an installation speed of 1 m/min, which leads to around 400–420 m2 per person a day, more than the usual manual roofing rate. Second version based on fuel burners demonstrates an installation speed of 1.75 m2/min, which equals to 700–735 m2 per person per day, more than twice the usual manual roofing rate while having similar fuel consumption. The cost-saving analysis shows an advantageous result when using the equipment against manual operation.
