120205 - A Preventive Maintenance System for an Emerging Novel Industry: Requisites for an Effective Implementation

The preventive maintenance programme has the significance of minimizing the unexpected downtime by providing the necessary programme schedule that contains the maintenance of the equipment and constitutes the system as well as the identification of probable maintenance incidents.  Such a programme imbibes the data obtained from the concerned standards for the nature of the equipment and the analysis of the similar data in terms of the application and work conditions.  Therefore the determination of the schedule for the different maintenance and preventive maintenance aspects of the equipment constitutes the primary effort.  The endeavour includes the consideration of the causes of probable malfunctioning of the system, sharing the data with the concerned section, and strategically incorporating in the decision making system of the preventive maintenance programme.  Such a programme requires an approved schedule of the equipment constituting the system and the implementation plan in such a way that the concerned personnel execute the programme, reports the findings, and updates the system upon obtaining the necessary approval.  The applications include any of the maintenance activities that one person cannot handle due to time, effort, and cost.  The infrastructure of the computerized programme consists of the endeavour of evolving at the database that includes the mentioned details, an interface to a tool that updates the database and a tool that enables a query, retrieves the answer, and/ or the generation of the report.  The work contributed to the initiation of the procedure to validate the data, compartmentalize the data from the implementation point of view, the efficient dynamics of the data, an efficient way of retrieving the answer, and the generation of an informative report.  The design of the database ensured the size efficient occupancy of the system, technical configuration, and compatibility with the tools.  The work prompted for the initiation of the computerized preventive maintenance programme that implements the performance criteria in terms of the volume of the database and the versatility of the retrieval system, using a suitable level of the interaction between the components of the system.  The work also prompted for the authoritative confirmation of the data that can be entered into the database, subject to the specific application area.  Therefore the work prompted for the identification of a preliminary approval by a suitable authority in the domain at the outset and subsequently the specialist in the application area.  Apart from the mentioned measures, the work also stated the necessity to tune the database, monitor the extension of the data for the resourcefulness in the application area, and the domain
